Do all Marble Fireplaces have gaps and what can be done to conceal them?

April 28, 2011

Marble Fireplaces are manufactured form individual sheets of marble and are individually carved in sections. Unlike fireplaces that are manufactured using injection moulding and cast into a mould, marble fireplaces cannot be 100% accurate.

Are gaps in a marble fireplace common?

Unfortunately, small gaps in a marble fireplace are perfectly normal and within tolerances.

What can be done to conceal gaps in a marble fireplace?

Practically, the only way to conceal gaps in a marble fireplace is by filling them with regular tile grout. By using tile grout it will not be possible to have a perfect colour match, however the overall effect will look fine

Why are there gaps in a marble fireplace?

1. Gaps in a marble fireplace are caused for a number of reasons including bowed marble slabs. Essentially marble slabs are never 100% uniform in thickness and for this reason there will be small gaps in the overall fireplace that result

2. The blade used to cut the marble is approximately 5mm thick, and as it cuts the marble there is a small amount of “over cuts” due to the motion (often referred to as the “talk”) of the blade

3. Marble fireplaces are hand assembled and for that reason have small amounts of inaccuracies In summary, there will always be gaps in a marble fireplace due to the hand assembly, CNC carving, cutting and inaccurate marble raw material slabs.
